How to choose a WMS: packaged vs custom

Walk a real inbound and a real pick. If the product cannot name your locations and exceptions, it is still an inventory app.

Demo the exception, not the happy path

Over-receive, short pick, damaged, hold, near-SKU. Packaged WMS products that only show a clean scan will fail the first busy afternoon. Custom work is justified when those exceptions are the product.

SaaS vs custom is fitness

SaaS wins when your process can move into theirs and interfaces are already listed. Custom wins when bin rules, posting time or device jobs cannot bend. Price is a follow-on question.

Ask for the location model

Warehouse, zone, bin — and whether a quantity can exist without a bin.
How lots and status combine.
What the PDA does when the radio dies.
Which ERP documents post, and who owns a failed post.

Vendor signals
